SAP HANA is a revolutionary multi-purpose in-memory database (IMDB)

SAP HANA appearance and success is a result of technology level growth, namely decreasing the cost 

and increasing capacity and performance of computer memory modules. On the other hand, growing demand of high-data-volume processing systems and inability of classic database architecture to deal with the current tasks efficiently.

Advantages of SAP HANA

  • Data processing speed. In-memory solution allows processing 100-200 times more requests per minute than conventional RDBMS
  • Efficient usage of parallel computing. Calculation and aggregation is done efficiently on the level of database while in many cases it is done on Application Server layer
  • Column-based data storage allow compressing the data which in turn allow storing 4-20 more data in memory
  • High scalability of SAP HANA architecture allows adding more hardware nodes to support required database size
  • Real-time analytics: no need in additional data-warehouse system and periodic ETL processing. Data can be consolidated, re

Standard usage scenarios for SAP HANA:

  • HANA Standalone. Simply using SAP HANA as an extremely quick database (up to 200 times faster than conventional RDMBS). Basic usage includes analytics on large data volumes, complex calculations, and reports. HANA is supplied with Studio - integrated environment for data model configuration, custom data processing routines development using SQL, L-language and R-language. Reporting in this scenario can be implemented using SAP Business Objects tools
  • SAP BW on HANA. In this case, HANA is used as a database layer for SAP BW. HANA is supported as a database for SAP BW starting from SAP NetWeaver 7.3. This scenario has certain advantages:
  1. A large amount of data processing logic is transferred to a database level. Calculation speed, in this case, is increased dramatically
  2. Data Sources (DSO) in SAP BW can be easily converted into HANA-optimized DSO, which significantly decreases time to upload and activate the data
  3. InfoCubes are implemented on the level of SAP HANA Core, which means higher performance in queries.
  • ERP on HANA. The most significant advantage is the increased speed of read requests and ability to use the same system for OLTP and OLAP processing. Analytical reports can be built in ERP system to allow real-time reporting. Pre-configured business reports exist for different industry solutions.
  • SAP Business One on HANA. High-performance solution for small and midsize enterprises (SME).
